Public slanging matches not the Larrakia way
The Aboriginal Protection Authority and Larrakia people have walked the entire area of the proposed Inpex gas development to ensure any areas of cultural significance to Larrakia people are identified and protected.
Mr Greg Constantine, the CEO of the Larrakia Development Corporation, said the Larrakia, who identify as the traditional owners of Darwin and the Cox Peninsula, have been involved with the Inpex development every step of the way for almost 12 months.
"The Larrakia Development Corporation is the business arm of the Larrakia people - it exists to create job opportunities, skills training and to improve the economic opportunities and benefits for all Larrakia and other Darwin based people," Mr Constantine said.
"The Corporation started with housing subdivisions, and has been successful in establishing business arrangements with companies such as ConocoPhillips, NLC, MacMahon's, Sitzlers, Canberra Investments Corporation, Defence Housing Australia, Urban Pacific, Transfield's, Chubb Security and now Inpex, all of which are favorable to the Larrakia."
"Our working relationships between Inpex have been detailed in regular meetings involving the Larrakia Development Corporation's Advisory Committee with representatives from all the major Larrakia families present and via its regular newsletters which are sent to hundreds of families in the Darwin area, whose members make up the 2,000 plus known Larrakia people," Mr Constantine said.
"The Aboriginal people who performed the traditional dance at the Parliament House ceremony celebrating the signing of the gas agreement between Inpex and the NT Government are descended from people of the Cox peninsula who have a two hundred year ceremonial relationship with the Larrakia."
The Larrakia Development Corporation respects the right of any person including individual Larrakia to object to a development.
The INPEX development must pass strict environmental assessment and the Larrakia Development Corporation looks forward to the public participation in that process.
