Larrakia homes joins the building elite
A Federal Government agency has certified that the Larrakia Development Corporation's house building arm, Larrakia Homes Pty Ltd, is among the nation's best in terms of safety on the job.
Apart from demonstrating its commitment to workplace safety, the Certificate qualifies Larrakia Homes to tender for major Government contracts let by organisations such as the Defence Housing Authority and SIHIP.
The building company, which won a string of industry awards last year, including Major Winner for Spec Home of the Year, had previously gained certification for its Occupational Health and Safety Management systems under Australian Standard 4801.
According to Mr Peter Poniris Managing Director of Larrakia Homes, meeting the AS 4801 benchmark allowed Larrakia Homes to apply to the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner for full accreditation.
A certificate recognizing the first-class safety credentials of Larrakia Homes was issued earlier this month by the Federal Safety Commission, Ms Helen Marshall.
Mr Poniris said the certificate meant that Larrakia Homes joined just five other building firms in the Territory with this qualification.
"We believe we will be the first Aboriginal-owned building company in the NT - and we think, in Australia -- to have gained full accreditation," Mr Poniris said.
"The audit by the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner is very thorough, and we are proud of the fact that Larrakia Homes got through the first time."
"Many companies have to go through the procedure two or three times to gain certification."
"We already have an impressive building portfolio in hand, and this certificate means we can now compete with the big end of town on major jobs let by Commonwealth Government agencies."
