Larrakia Development Corporation stresses its independence

The Chairman of the Larrakia Development Corporation has stressed the independence of the organization's decision-making process.

Koolpinyah Richard Barnes said that Larrakia people were firmly in control of the Corporation's business plan, and the discharge of its traditional and social obligations.

"From time to time, the Corporation has to remind the community that although we are a successful development and building company, our roots are very firmly planted in the traditions of the original owners of the Darwin area" Mr Barnes said.

"A media report at the weekend mistakenly described the LDC as a 'Northern Land Council company'".

"It is true that eight years ago the Land Council provided $10,000 seed money to establish the LDC, making it the Corporation's only shareholder" Mr Barnes said.

"But the seven-member Board that I am privileged to Chair makes all the financial and development decisions that have made the LDC one of the indigenous business success stories of Australia".

"Five of the seven members of that Board are Larrakia people, with direct family links and relationships with the 2,000 or so people in the Darwin area who identify as Larrakia".
