Inpex moves to second stage of AU$12 billion LNG plant
The Larrakia Development Corporation has welcomed yesterday's decision by Inpex President, Mr Kuroda, to move to the second stage of the energy company's proposed $12 billion LNG plant in Darwin.
The Chairman of the Aboriginal-owned Corporation, Koolpinyah Richard Barnes, extended his congratulations to the Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, for his follow-up work on the status of the LNG project since Inpex named Darwin as its preferred site late last year.
"The Larrakia Development Corporation has a big stake in the success of the Chief Minister's initiatives to secure the gas plant for the Northern Territory", Mr Barnes said.
"The Corporation's Board has already negotiated for the inclusion of the 'Larrakia Clause' in Inpex’s business plan for the Darwin project".
"This means that job-ready Larrakia workers will be eligible for preferential employment opportunities, and our business arms will compete on equal terms for commercial contracts during the construction phase of the plant".
Since 2002, The Larrakia Development Corporation has developed residential subdivisions, and set up companies to undertake civil works, commercial building, environmental services and landscaping.
More than 150 local Aboriginal people worked on the construction of ConocoPhillips Darwin LNG plant in 2002/03, mostly due to an employment placement program run by the LDC.
It has placed more Larrakia youngsters with MacMahon Constructions on the extensions to Tiger Brennan Drive, and another Corporation offshoot, Larrakia Environmental Services, has won the contract to landscape the new highway.
Other Larakia are completing traineeships with construction companies working on Darwin's Waterfront Development
Larrakia Development Corporation's house construction business, Larrakia Homes Pty Ltd, has won numerous awards for building and design excellence, and is now tendering for 39 home for Defence families.
The Corporation also runs Saltwater Constructions, Larrakia Turf Farm and Cox Peninsula Enterprises.
