Larrakia trade training school on the drawing board
The Territory's first trade training school for Larrakia, Aboriginal and other local youth will take shape by the end of this year, according to the Larrakia Development Corporation.
The Larrakia Development Corporation trade training school will be established at Berrimah, and on land owned by the Larrakia Development Corporation near the Darwin Port precinct.

The Larrakia Trade Training has been created to offer new levels of innovative training for traineeships and apprentices. Located on Berrimah Road within the East Arm Port precinct, it is expected to open in September.

The Centre is partnered through a strategic alliance between the Larrakia Development Corporation, Kormilda College and ATI. Each of these entities are contributing their skills, assets, experience and networks to create a dynamic new approach to trade training for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.

The Larrakia Trade Training Centre Newspaper is packed with information regarding this project, which was a vision of the Larrakia Development Corporations for a long time, to empower the Larrakia in finding and maintaining meaningful employment.

Larrakia Development Corporation, Kormilda College and Advanced Training International (ATI) have worked together to bring this wonderful opportunity to Larrakia, as well as other Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of the Top End. Supported by INPEX, part of the Ichthys Project, with the gratitude of the Larrakia Development Corporation for speeding up this vision of employment.

Larrakia Capabilities Statement 2010

The Larrakia Development Corporation has won widespread respect and business partnerships because of its strong board and governance. It receives no government funding and reinvests its profits in new business ventures, with a proportion of profits going into a distribution fund that is spent on scholarships, funerals, and care for the elderly.

The board has strong governance requirements, with all members required to attend Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The Larrakia Development Corporation has done more than provide jobs, training and turn a profit. It has given the Larrakia people a voice in the future of the development of their own land.

The Larrakia Development Corporation, through its commercial conduct, gives every one of the 2,600 Larrakia people plenty of reasons to feel proud.

An Indigenous Success Story

The Larrakia Development Corporation have put their own story to print and recently released a publication titled "An Indigenous Success Story".

Administrator for the Northern Territory, Ted Egan AO, penned the foreword praising the vision and ethos of the Corporation.

The story outlines the Corporation's early formative years abd describes the challenges the Boards endured along its journey along with its achievements and the multi-million dollar success of the Darla Estate.

The book also profiles each of the Board's Directors, staff and business arms, outlining everyones role and contribution to the Corporation.
